The secret lives of transsexual mongolians CNN

chants and monks and buddhism in Asia

Was just thinking how lucky i feel to have had the chance of listening to monks chant, watching them eat and get on with their day-to-day in temples and monasteries around Asia.

The profound long sounds of Buddhist monks chanting, the om mane padme hum in Swaiambutinah, that second time in Kathmandú, the monks singing in Gandan temple in Ulan Bator and Bayasgalan in northern Mongolia and the others in Luang Prabang and Siem Reap, and China. I have heard monks chanting in different corners of Asia and the feeling of peacefulness that invaded my chest and the tears it brought to my eyes are unforgettable moments. Unforgettable tears for thankfulness for having had the chance of experiencing this first hand and the joy it brought on me.

festival asia

Fascinant.
Estic agraïda d'haver vist un lloc així.

sobre mongolia

Gairebé un any després del viatge, em decideixo a fer una revisió, afegir informació i mirar enrera i reviure Mongòlia. Entre que m'encanta llegir i els llibres, i em fascina viatjar i mirar mapes i preparar viatges, com no?!

1 July Beijing markets and Temple of Heaven

Morning in Beijing, we wake up in the 4 bunk bed dorm. I hope she is in a better mood than last night. Last night, I wasn't sure whether she was angry at me at how i managed the situation at reception or just angry because of what happened. I may be more relaxed at all this, but this is maybe a lack of assertiveness from my side, but then this is because if something really bothers you you (i) do express it. Anyway, between checking our emails and a quick walk around the amazing, noisy and busy market which closes at 9am on the dot, we kill time to sort out about our double, and we leave it sorted before we hit the streets towards the Temple of Heaven.
That market was something! from 6 to 9 one of the most fascinating, colourful market I have seen takes place right 100 feet away from our hostel. The husstle and bustle, the foods on display, women and men alike around, the food being cooked, fried, boiled, steamed, the dough, the skillfulness of those making it, how tasty it was! we tried a number of things, each was about 0.10€ and nothing gave us an upset tummy, it was all delicious, a pleasure for our taste buds.
We really enjoyed this morning scene on our second last day in China, before our departure.
We sit down while we sip our canned white coffee while eating their instense flavoured foods, canned coffee and breakfast food in China probably is a rare, unusual sight for them, a bit of no-no thing for them, but what the heck, we needed that bit of a kick our system is hooked to.

We managed to them them free breakfast and then when we paid, and extra discount for the hassle...trying to speak to the girls we liked most nicely but determinedly about how disappointed we had been after being so pleased with the service before we left for Mongolia and all. Change money, I buy another 2GB memory card for 180yuans when the first price was 490 i think.
Well off we go on foot to the do the sights. It all seems a bit easier now! straight down the shopping street...Change money. We saw a chinese decorative door leading to what looked like a food market on our right. The right we take to find food, brightly coloured shops and souvenir stalls. As you walked past the tenders grabbed you by the arm to stay at theirs. All of them had very attractive items, really cool dolls, mao zedong stuff, chopsticks, decks of cards with communist pictures, teapots and tea sets, cups... lots lots of things, carved stone stamps...i have to push her out of there because she would have remained there and bought the whole market! hahahaha. Carry on walking, we make a right, reach Tiananmen Square, make a left and straight down. and straight down, a left at another left...posh, recently built shopping street.
off we go to Temple of Heaven
ever-longest wall i have seen, Zara is there, beautiful and classy chopsticks shops, tea sets, decorations, food, ...
youths with very unusual hairdos in a what looked an old hutong neighbourghood in the process of renovation (=turn it into high rise buildings and destroy the tradional chinse housing)
a labyrinth, we must be very very close but there's no way we find the way to the temple. We stumble upon this very long wall i said, never-ending wall on the right, never ending wall on the left. We were desperate for an entrance to what must be the Temple of Heaven grounds but no gate to be seen!

rickshaw 2 yuans with his fingers, asks for 20 at the door,
Temple of heaven, Beautiful
girls in imperial costums, friendly and smily.
throngs everywhere, a handful of tourists too, a handful proportionally to the chinese visitors makes a nice figure!
it was 5ish pm when we got to the shopping street food market, amazing food, I was starving, we hadn't had any lunch
...

29 June UB and fly back to Beijing

This is coming to an end. We have mixed feelings about it.
We wake up in humid UB, earlyish so that we can make the most of what's left of our time in MOngolia. The plan today, thanks to judit's careful planning of the few hours remaining, is... a wonderful French breakfast at the French bakery round the corner from our hostel, go and check about luggage allowance and flight re-confirmation (we did it from Khovsgol) at MIAT offices, which were also just one minute walk from our guesthouse. Location was great!
We crossed our street and walked through what looked like back-streets to us which are actually normal one with communist looking blocks of flats and still-fairly-bare shops, a park with the adults-type-of-swings to keep them exercising and I shortly located the French bakery recommened in our LP. The look inside was totally western. We so well knew we wanted! Ordered capuccinos and chocolate croissants, which were heavy and buttery, which translates into DELICIOUS! A treat after two weeks of hardly no food for breakfast and really basic stuff, except for a tin of olives and biscuits and aloe vera juice the odd day. Real coffee and the bread they carefully placed in the bread window/counter seemed "freshly" brought in from France in a 5 minute walk distance! Still with the rush in our veins of being clean and just washed hair and with our spotless nails it felt almost home!
Judit and I had compared prices for airport transfers by taxi, we were quoted 10.000tg if i dont remember badly but in the end we decided to accept Nassan's 12.000tg because it'd be more practical for us.
I also popped up to Nassan's to accept her offer to drive us to the airport for 12.000tg and the moment she opens the door she says we can be taken there for 10.000 without me uttering a word! great! I wonder what's crossed her mind ... again this business-orientation and the utter desire of offering the best service at almost unbeatable prices in exchange of our good reviews about her tours and service, which fine by us but it's just too obvious that it makes you sick! Anyway, and now... it's time for shopping! off we go to the big souvernir shop in the flower centre on the corner of peace avenue. Dolls and boots catch J's attention, clothes and hats and bags from west Asian cultures mine, ...
want to buy sandwiches for the wait and flight and there was nothing like ready packed sandwiches to go in the shop! Noodles and biscuits again but no proper take away food. We hit a busy koshoor restaurant and we order some veg and meat ones to go, which we eat in the room while we tried to stuff what we've bought into our already jammed-full bags! and off we go to the airport in this brand new 4WD that picked us up at the station when we arrived. I seemed like crazy too taking pics of UB.
Communist-looking buildings, busy and shaky bus shelters, a power station, it's a sprawling city. 1.2m of inhabitants, many of them have seen the city change dramatically over the last 20 years, 10 in particular I'd dare to say, since the fall of communism, others have grown up along with the changes taking place, with the ideas of the parents conflicting with their changing present: consumer society, growth and expansion of brands and designer labels, communications - older generations used to study in Russia, younger ones if they can afford it, want to leave the country for better job prospects). Old and new buildigns giving the city an incongruous look and feel. It's certainly not nice, no personality, no character i'd dare to say, because of the buildings, which along with its people is, what i think, gives cities their own character. Dodgy looking. Said to be unsafe too, high levels of alchoholism steered by homelessness. children living in manholes to keep warm in the long winter nights when cold is extreme and bitter, unbearable at first sight to many of us, in cosy mediterranean countries. I said at first sight cos there was the American girl who grew used to it. Humans are adaptabe and adjustable. But Mongolia would be a hard one to adapt to. Airport wait, and boad the plane of to Beijing again.
we see a different part of the airport, and it's new and glittery and fancy. Visa control, taxi which was taken at the taxi rank and off we drive, same familiar road agaion, same really high buildings and the taximeter running faster than on our arrival and we had very little cash left!
Had reserved a twin on-line from the north of mongolia, a few days ago, about under a week.
We get there they have no room available for us and they assign us a 4-bed bunk. Judit was outraged at this, i wasn't so angry but we did say we had tried to make a reservation the day we left, that we had stayed there two weeks earlier and had been pleased with the service but to no avail. We spoke to the head of staff in the morning, got free breakfast and ???
Rest or out??

28 June Monastery and drive back to UB

Li vaig a fer fotos. Ara mirant enrera m'hagues agradat parlar-li, asseure'm i mirar què i com feia.

Have our coffee, make a count of how many we have left and we see her hiding some sachets, none of us said a word but that wasn't very nice. In a way, were glad she'd forgotten to take the food from the boot when we left her! (There's a different feel now, we are not far from the city and it all looks a bit more populated, more like the outskirts of the capital, so to speak. The amazing, pristine landscape is no longer.

27 June drive up to Amarbayasgalant Khiid

Homemade bread today! Yum yum with a bit of jam! What a treat! Food has been boring, bland, rather tasteless most days when eating with families but undeniably an experience. Freshly- and hand-made flour noodles, boiled with dry meat, all kinds of milk and dairy products. So the bread was a real treat, it was as sign that this is coming to an end.
Today we’ll be in the car the whole day too. We drive along a road Chaga had never driven through before and I was just in awe how he can be so sure what’s the right way when there’s no road signs. “Only one road” he replies. Well but still! Vegetation today resembles more our European bushes and trees. The Selenge river is on our left and we drive across dense vegetation and cool-shaped mountains. Fields with yellow flowers and alpine vegetation further east, and we stop by a river to collect some water to boil for our lunch, pee and I take the opportunity to sink and dip and soak my fingers to try to remove the almost permanent dirt in my nails. The water we collect looks dirty, it has this pale brownish colour which is a bit off-putting to be honest and the boiling we give it I doubt it's enough to kill the germs in it. Landscape is beautiful, as usual. These days Chaga has been explaining that that week flowers, in a given area, were yellow and that within 10 days they’d change colour, another type will blossom, and he said: this week yellow, in 10 days, pink and later blue… We’ll stop and look at the pink twisted one, and the amount of grasshoppers there is is also hard to believe! Different sizes, big as I’d never seen them before, and colours (brown and green).
We drive past an ovoo, which I have re-named as “a nest of shit” since with the excuse of leaving an offering, all kind of rubbish is dumped there: bags, broken pair of glasses, lots of empty bottles of whisky and money basically. Would you feel tempted to nick the money? Maybe but superstition wins and you don’t as it may be a bad omen! The pines in the trees are nice too, small, red and softish. Herds block our way, 3 boys in their teens and 2 adults herding the sheep, goats, and horses. Later, they’ll be having a tea with us, which will give the chance to see the ritual with mongol tea that Chaga makes for them.
We stop for lunch at a field swamped by flies. Very annoying, they even show in our pictures. And the nomads we drove past half an hour earlier stop by us. We take pics of them, with them and we even see the offering some tea before drinking that Chaga has performed for them. He took a ladleful of tea and threw it up to the skies. And I offer them our chewy biscuits we don't like. We are sick of them. In 10 minutes none’s left! Cool. Good deed of the day.
It’s amazing to have so many animals right next to us, cows, the horses and goats,… these people explained that their wives were in the new location, behind a mountain, and they drove there while they are in charge of leading the animals there on horseback. Modern women! The girls complain and make a fuss about bees in the car. Today is my turn to sit in front. Drive through the very soviet looking and copper mining town of Erdenet, famous for an almost all Russian population a couple of decades ago. You go in through the all-Mongolian wooden and metal housing to reach the communist part of town with soviet blocks of flats. Apparently it used to be misplaced in maps so that it was hard or impossible for people to find this town, I guess because of its mining resources. Now it’s the second biggest city in Mongolia. We have our room temperature, which is warm, coffee, I developed the habit of pouring the coffee sachets into the bottle of water to make us a “cold” water coffee mid-afternoon without having to stop and heating water.

We get to a nice spot, and we see the Amarbayasgalant Monasetry in the distance on our right. Get to our guesthouse and the old lady with a very nice and pleasant smile lights us a fire and brings more chips of wood, which I help her to put in our ger basket and she starts making us dinner and chaga to fix the car, for a change. J and I decide to go for a walk, and in the end, K tags along: “girls give me a minute!” and it’s about a long 20-minute wait there in the ger, just waiting. The left hand side of the monastery is kind of developed, the Mongolian way, not nice, it’s like a small community here, and so far it had all been quite if not very pristine. A pool table, monks wandering about, horses, a few shops and new-looking, squatting but walled, blue toilets, and gers and houses. And the monastery of course. And the big stupa being painted (or built?), behind our ger.

I don't remember what we ate for dinner. But i do remember a few blokes a bit younger than us in the house next to our ger, looking at us and us trying not to look at them but hard to resist, much as mongolian men are not attractive, to say the least. The girls take the piss with me and Chaga, they say he goes follows me whereever i go. I think I am the only one who listens to him and takes some interst in him. He's a nice man.
It must have been another night in the ger with no light, just a candle and our headtorches, dogs barking outside and bit of sky seen from the crown of the ger...

There's a different feel now, we are not far from the city and it all looks a bit more populated, more like the outskirts of the capital, so to speak. The amazing, pristine landscape is no longer. Fields, industry, blocks of flats.
